I discovered Smart Doll on a whim back in 2020 while playing a video game that featured ball jointed dolls. I had never heard of them before but as the main character collected anime styled bjd’s, I was curious to know if this was a real thing.
I had always loved anime as a child and wished for a sailor moon or magical girl inspired doll. Sadly, they weren’t accurate representations of the characters I loved, so I turned to figure collecting instead.
Smart Doll especially caught my attention while searching. It was, in my opinion, my ideal anime aesthetic. Now, I had no interest or desire to collect dolls, but seeing a doll named “Fortitude” with red hair, blue eyes and freckles caught my attention. She was my mini me and now I own her in every color wave…. Not to mention a few others.
What started as a companion, turned into friendships, community and a lot of inspiration. 2020 marked a great year of turmoil, covid, depression, panic disorder, severe food allergies and a heart condition. I was extremely grateful to have a distraction and one that brought me immense joy.
Since 2020 I’ve learned to sew, consider myself a photographer and most importantly a face-up artist. I drew a lot growing up, especially original anime characters I’d create with my cousin. Faces and hair were my most favorite thing to draw… probably explains my ridiculously enormous wig collection and my love for drawing faces.
I choose smart doll as my medium because it’s unlike anything I’ve ever known. It’s like being a doll makeup artist and I love it. Plus they are the most beautiful and understanding models to work with.
To everyone who voted, thank you. Without you I would never have gained the confidence to pursue this hobby. Your support, kindness, friendships and commissions are everything. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all so much.
Huge thanks to all of my friends and fellow creators who have become family over the years. Your gift of knowledge is enormous and I admire you more than I could ever say. Thanks for being my mentors and inspiration. I’m your biggest fan.
