Chelsea is also home to a Japanese restaurant called "Benihana" where I used to work as a waiter for many years.
I remember my first paycheque so vividly. I opened the envelope and just stood there looking at my first wage in silence - unable to move and confused.
How was it that I worked so many hours until late in the evenings only to be compensated so little?
After leaving my dad's studio, I had no income, so I had little choice but to continue working at Benihana - but I'm glad I did, as it changed my life.
It wasn't until later that I discovered the wage was calculated according to sales. During quiet periods, the wage was rock bottom low, but during busy times, the wage was generous. I managed to save enough every year to visit Japan, where I could soak in the culture and improve my Japanese speaking.
During busy periods, Benihana was hectic - which was great as I learned to deal with so much chaos - customers, staff, logistics, inventory, quality control, and what have you.
These days, if I am hiring, I rather give priority to folks who have worked in a restaurant than to folks with a BA or MA.
I also met wifey at Benihana - I am lucky to be with her ;-)
So there you have it - my "Chelsea" story ;-)
We kept the design of the boot orthodox, but we made sure to make them look as weathered as possible so expect a ton of uneven blemishes on the surface that will patina over time as you handle it with your hands soaked in the aftermath of having some Mc Donald's fries.
Unlike human versions, we put a zip on the inside to allow it to be worn with ease. While the Chelsea boot design dates back to the Victorian era, the name apparently derived from the design becoming popular back in the fifties and sixties in an area called Chelsea in London.

Reasons Not To Buy
- Smart Doll boots may cost more than your own shoes—unless you're a sneaker collector, in which case your Smart Doll might slap you out of jealousy.
- The price of our leather boots may fluctuate depending on our production schedule and stock levels. When our schedule is tight—limiting how many we can produce—or when inventory is running low, prices may increase accordingly.
- The interior is lined with cream-colored material to help minimize staining. However, the outer leather does not have such protection, so prolonged contact with sofubi may result in discoloration.
- Made from real leather (not faux), these boots will feature natural blemishes. We haven’t found a better long-lasting alternative yet, so for now, these are unfortunately not vegan-friendly.
- Product may differ in the extent of aging or patina from the photos, as leather naturally develops character over time.
- For a more weathered look, you can:
- Lightly sand the surface
- Rub it with your fingers (natural oils will enhance texture)
- Just wash your hands first if you’ve been eating a Big Mac—those oils don’t count and will just annoy your Smart Doll due to that Mc Dees smell following them everywhere.
- Color names are just a guide:
- “Brown blah boots” could be anything from light tan to dark chocolate.
- “Wine red blah boots” might range from soft rose to deep cabernet.
- Not suitable for snorkeling, scuba diving, or other water-based fun.
- Not recommended for storing ice cream.
- Not ideal with wedding dresses—unless your Smart Doll bride plans to do a runner after.
- Soles do not have nonstick properties. If your Smart Doll steps in dog poo:
- The poo will stick (as poo does).
- Wipe it off on grass and kindly remind your Smart Doll to watch where they step.
- But beware—if another dog has already blessed the grass, you may end up layering poo on poo.
- If that happens, let the whole mess dry, then remove it with a chisel and hammer. Try not to breathe while doing this.
