Everything we create embraces asymmetry—from the earliest stages of 3D modeling to the final hand-painting process. Like real human faces, Smart Doll designs are intentionally asymmetrical to avoid the uncanny valley and create a look that feels natural, relatable, and full of character.
This design philosophy is clearly explained throughout our website, particularly in the *Before You Buy* section. We also ensure that all product photos are published at a minimum resolution of 2500px wide, so anyone can zoom in and examine these details before committing to a purchase.
And yet, one of the most common complaints we continue to receive is that Smart Doll faces aren’t symmetrical. Despite our efforts to communicate this upfront, these traits are still often mistaken for flaws—resulting in disappointment for the customer, and admittedly, for us as well. It’s disheartening to see genuine craftsmanship misread simply because the details were overlooked.
So, in the spirit of radical clarity (and preventing further misunderstandings), we’re introducing a new standard: from today, all new Smart Doll characters will only have half of their face painted. The difference should now be obvious to anyone, even without reading a single word on our site—helping to prevent future misunderstandings and unmet expectations.
Ironically, painting just half a face has proven to be more time-consuming than painting the entire thing. This is due to the added complexity of aligning paint masks with precision while preventing overspray across the unpainted side. It also presents unique challenges in achieving balance and expression with only one set of facial features—an exercise that has given our paint team a newfound appreciation for the full-face approach.
As always, we remain committed to transparency, experimentation, and the occasional rethinking of what’s considered “normal.”
The first Smart Doll to mark this milestone is fittingly named “Asymmetry” ;-)
