We want to be transparent with our community about a recent change to how we classify Smart Doll for international shipping — a change that reflects not only the handmade nature of our product, but also how Smart Doll has always been used and understood by our customers.
Until recently, we declared Smart Doll under the “toy” category for customs purposes (HS Code 9503). This was partly because Smart Doll has always been meant to be enjoyed by folks of all ages, including younger fans — often alongside a parent or guardian.
However, the way Smart Doll is designed, built, and experienced doesn’t align with how toys are mass-produced, packaged, or regulated.

- Hand-assembled in Japan by a small team using techniques more closely aligned with model-making or sculpture than traditional toy manufacturing
- Designed as a collectible fashion doll, with deep storytelling, tailored apparel, and a wide range of customization options
- Produced in limited quantities each month due to the size of our team — a sharp contrast to mass-produced toys made in large-scale factories
- Almost always purchased by adults, or by younger fans with adult supervision — and an adult’s credit card ;-)
To reflect this, we now classify Smart Doll under HS Code 9703.00.00.00 — the international code for original sculptures and statuary. This is the same category used for art figures and collectibles, and better represents what Smart Doll has always been at its core.
About the “Age 15+” Label
As part of this update, Smart Doll will now appear on customs forms and invoices as a “Collectible Fashion Doll Age 15+.” This is not a restriction or a change to who can enjoy Smart Doll — it simply reflects how customs authorities distinguish between art collectibles and mass-produced toys, especially in regions with strict toy safety laws. As always, we trust that younger fans will continue to enjoy Smart Doll with the guidance and support of their families, just as they always have.
Will This Change Affect Duties or Taxes?
This update does not change how we declare the value of your order, and we continue to comply with all international shipping and customs regulations.
That said, many regions classify art and collectible items differently from toys, and in some cases, this may result in reduced or waived import duties. However, VAT or GST (like EU’s 19% or the UK’s 20%) will still apply where required.
Please note that import fees are determined by your country’s customs office, and we do not have control over how or when those are applied.
What This Means
- This change helps prevent customs delays or reclassification in regions with strict toy regulations (like 3C in China or CE in the EU)
- Smart Doll will now appear on invoices and customs forms as a Collectible Fashion Doll Age 15+
- There’s no change to how you order, receive, or enjoy your Smart Doll — just a shift behind the scenes that allows us to continue shipping globally with fewer complications
