The burger - one of the most persistent threats to Smart Doll apparel, its oils acting as a slow-working venom
Why do fabrics turn yellow over time?
Just like how sofubi (soft vinyl) yellows over time, fabrics can also yellow as part of their natural aging process.
This can happen for several reasons.
Oxidation is one of the main causes. Over time, fabric fibers react with oxygen in the air, which leads to gradual yellowing. This can happen even if the item is not being used and is simply stored.
Oils and residues also play a role. On human clothing, sweat and body oils build up and oxidize, which is why areas like collars or underarms tend to yellow. On Smart Doll apparel, fabrics can come into contact with sofubi. Soft vinyl contains plasticizers that can slowly migrate to the surface and transfer to fabric over time, contributing to yellowing or staining, especially on lighter colors.
Detergent residue can also contribute. If detergent is not fully rinsed out during washing, it can remain in the fabric and gradually discolor over time.
Ultraviolet light from sunlight can break down fibers and dyes, which may lead to yellowing or uneven discoloration.
Does this affect all fabrics?
Yellowing can occur in both natural and synthetic fabrics. Materials like cotton and linen tend to show yellowing more clearly over time, while synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon can also yellow due to heat, UV exposure, or chemical reactions. It is not limited to a specific material.
Does color or thickness matter?
Lighter colors, especially white, show yellowing more clearly. Darker fabrics can also age and discolor, but the change is less visible.
Thinner fabrics may show changes sooner due to higher exposure, while thicker fabrics may take longer, but can still yellow over time.
Is this unique to Smart Doll apparel?
No. This is normal behavior seen in many materials.
White shirts stored for long periods can turn yellow. Frequently worn clothing can yellow due to sweat and oils. Even unused fabrics can discolor over time depending on how they are stored.
We generally do not recommend washing Smart Doll apparel unless necessary.
Frequent washing can accelerate fading, affect the texture of the fabric, and gradually cause dulling or slight color changes over time.
For day-to-day care, fabric refresh sprays such as Febreze or Downy fabric sprays can be used lightly to keep items fresh between uses. These help reduce odors, but do not prevent or reverse yellowing.
Denim is an exception. Since the legs are a common place to hold a Smart Doll, jeans can sometimes get a bit greasy from burger oils on your hands over time. Washing denim is fine when needed, but please note that this will accelerate fading. The rate of fading is similar to human denim, as it is made using the same materials and processes.
If washing is necessary, we recommend gentle hand washing with a mild detergent, followed by thorough rinsing and air drying. Avoid strong chemicals such as chlorine bleach, as these may damage the fabric or cause further discoloration.
As with all fabrics, minimizing exposure to heat, sunlight, and prolonged contact with sofubi can help reduce visible aging over time.
Can yellowing be reduced or treated?
Yellowing cannot be completely prevented, but it can be reduced, and in some cases the appearance can be improved.
When necessary, gentle washing can help remove oils, residues, and surface buildup that contribute to yellowing. It’s important to rinse thoroughly to avoid detergent residue.
Some fabrics may respond to mild whitening methods such as oxygen-based cleaners, which can help reduce discoloration caused by buildup or oxidation.
Briefly exposing fabrics to indirect sunlight can sometimes help brighten them, but prolonged or direct UV exposure can worsen yellowing, so this should be done carefully.
Storing items in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight can help slow down further yellowing.
For lighter-colored clothing, avoiding prolonged tight contact with sofubi can help reduce the risk of staining or accelerated yellowing.
What if I prefer items that don’t yellow over time?
All fabrics change over time, and there isn’t a material that remains completely unchanged.
Lighter colors, such as white, tend to show yellowing more clearly. Darker fabrics may show less yellowing, but can fade over time depending on use and washing. These behaviors are part of how the materials age.
If long-term material changes are a concern, it may be worth taking this into account before purchasing. Some customers choose to experiment using the free apparel patterns available on our site before committing to finished items.
Results can vary depending on the material and the cause of the yellowing. Some yellowing is permanent, especially if it is due to long-term oxidation or material aging. Strong chemicals such as chlorine bleach can damage fabrics or cause further discoloration over time.
Staining from Smart Doll apparel or third-party clothing is also not covered under warranty. We provide
