Everything we create embraces asymmetry—starting from the 3D modeling stage, where we design the sculpts that eventually become the molds used in our slush casting process. While facial structures are typically mirrored during the early design phase, we intentionally introduce subtle asymmetry before printing. This helps avoid the uncanny valley effect and ensures the final result feels more natural and lifelike.
Just like real human faces, Smart Doll face designs are intentionally asymmetrical.
This asymmetry extends beyond the sculpt and into the painting and finishing processes—meaning no two Smart Dolls will ever look exactly alike. We understand that some may view these variations as flaws, and we fully respect those who choose not to purchase based on this characteristic. That’s why we believe it’s important to be transparent about what to expect.
Upon close inspection, you may notice slight differences in the painted details of the eyes. Elements such as eyelashes, highlights, and eyeliner may vary in size, placement, or intensity from one side to the other, as illustrated in images 3 and 4. For characters with a Double Layer Eyelash design, the lash layers are hand-painted using stencils and are not intended to align perfectly—though occasionally they might, as shown in the comparison between images 1 and 2.
These variations arise from several aspects of our production process. Paint masks can shift slightly during application, causing minor differences in alignment. Since the original makeup is hand-painted, it will never be a perfect mirror image—just like a human face.
Blush on the cheeks and around the eyes is also applied freehand, which means pressure, coverage, and color density will naturally vary from one face to another.
We know that some may interpret these organic differences as inconsistency or even poor craftsmanship—and we’re completely okay with that. Our approach won’t resonate with everyone. But for us, these variations are a deliberate part of the creative process and a core element of what gives each Smart Doll its unique personality and depth.
Smart Dolls are intentionally asymmetrical—from the 3D sculpt to the final layers of paint. Everyone has different tastes, and we know there are brands that better cater to those seeking perfect symmetry or machine precision.
